L’utilisation de méthodes inadaptées et l’absence de réelles problématiques vis-à-vis des restes archéocarcinologiques par le passé, ont abouti à un désintérêt apparent des scientifiques pour le crabe dans le registre archéologique jusqu’au début des années 2000. Ce travail est centré sur l’étude et l’analyse des fragments de crabe issus du site mésolithique de Port-Neuf, localisé sur l’île d’Hoedic. Avec l’utilisation de diverses méthodes d’identification, de quantification, le développement d’un nouvel outil dédié, ainsi que la prise d’un grand nombre de mesures morphométriques, une importante quantité de données a été obtenue. Les résultats des analyses de ces dernières montrent un choix délibéré de certaines espèces de crabe, ainsi que le ciblage de zones spécifiques sur l’estran par les populations mésolithiques d’Hoedic. L’utilisation du site de Port-Neuf comme référence, et la comparaison des données archéocarcinologiques avec celles des autres sites préhistoriques à l’échelle de l’Europe atlantique, ont permis de mettre en lumière deux éléments. Le premier, est que l’étude des fragments de crabe permet d’obtenir un grand nombre d’informations relatives à la fois à son exploitation, mais aussi au rapport qu’entretenaient les populations humaines préhistoriques avec la mer et ses ressources. Le second point mis en avant est le manque de précision des données relatives au crabe (espèces, nombre d’individus) pour une majorité de sites archéologiques en Europe atlantique, qui limite encore aujourd’hui notre vision du passé. This study focuses on the exploitation of crabs by human populations during Prehistory, on the Atlantic coast of Europe. The use of inappropriate methods and the lack of real issues regarding archaeocarcinological remains in the past led to an apparent disinterest from scientists in crabs in the archaeological record until the early 2000s. This work focuses on the study and analysis of crab fragments from the Mesolithic site of Port-Neuf, located on the island of Hoedic. With the use of various identification methods, quantification, the development of a new dedicated tool, as well as the collection of a large number of morphometric measurements, a significant amount of data was obtained. The results of the analyses of these latter show a deliberate choice of certain crab species, as well as the targeting of specific areas on the foreshore by the Mesolithic populations of Hoedic. The use of the Port-Neuf site as a reference, and the comparison of archaeocarcinological data with those of other prehistoric sites across Atlantic Europe have highlighted two elements. The first is that the study of crab fragments allows us to obtain a great deal of information related both to its exploitation and to the relationship that prehistoric human populations had with the sea and its resources. The second point highlighted is the lack of precision in the data related to crabs (species, number of individuals) for the majority of archaeological sites in Atlantic Europe, which still limits our understanding of the past today.
