Au-delà de la digestion, cet écosystème microbien joue un rôle clé dans l’immunité, le métabolisme et la santé mentale. Cette émergence à mis en lumière la dysbiose, un déséquilibre du microbiote, comme facteur potentiellement impliqué dans de nombreuses pathologies. Les inhibiteurs de la pompe à protons (IPP) sont parmi les médicaments les plus prescrits et consommés dans le monde. Leur action principale est de réduire l’acidité gastrique, ce qui en fait le choix numéro un dans la prise en charge des pathologies liées à l’acidité. Or l’acide chlorhydrique contenu dans l’estomac constitue une première barrière naturelle essentielle pour prévenir la prolifération bactérienne dans l’intestin grêle, naturellement peu colonisé. La prise chronique d’IPP, en levant cette barrière acide, favorise la dysbiose intestinale et, plus spécifiquement, le Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). Le SIBO se manifeste par des symptômes digestifs non spécifiques (gaz, ballonnements, douleurs abdominales, troubles du transit), souvent confondus avec le Syndrome de l’intestin irritable (SII), conduisant fréquemment à une errance diagnostique. In recent years, there has been a major increase in awareness of the importance of gut microbiota for overall health. Beyond digestion, this microbial ecosystem plays a key role in immunity, metabolism, and mental health. This emergence has highlighted dysbiosis, an imbalance in the microbiota, as a factor potentially involved in many diseases. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are among the most widely prescribed and consumed drugs in the world. Their main action is to reduce gastric acidity, making them the number one choice in the management of acidity-related diseases. However, the hydrochloric acid in the stomach is an essential natural barrier that prevents bacterial proliferation in the small intestine, which is naturally sparsely colonized. Chronic PPI use removes this acid barrier, promoting intestinal dysbiosis and, more specifically, Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). SIBO manifests itself through non-specific digestive symptoms (gas, bloating, abdominal pain, transit disorders), often confused with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), frequently leading to diagnostic uncertainty.
