<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">The increasing role of friendship in the contemporary context of declining traditional social structures and its impact on consumption has not been studied. This thesis seeks to fill this gap by dealing in particular with female dyadic friendship, that is, the phenomenon of the "best friend". To do this, we have adopted a multidisciplinary approach in the field of Consumer Culture Theory (CCT) and collected data by various qualitative methods. If we were expecting that friendship, as an emotional relationship based on the free choice of individuals, is favorable to the expression of individualistic consumer behavior, our results show that dyadic friendship structures, on the contrary, altruistic consumption practices. The analysis of interpersonal influences and of the dyad's consumption patterns indeed highlights the existence of a tendency to homogenize consumption practices. We propose to explain this phenomenon through a Maussian interpretation of the place of consumption in the dynamics of friendship. The best friend dyad is thus presented as a social framework where consumption is subordinated to the logic of "permanent recreation of the social bond". In this perspective, we recommend that marketing managers adopt an approach that does not contradict the underlying dynamic based on trust, personalization, the primacy of symbolic value and the balance of exchanges, but on the contrary offers a possibility of development for friendship through consumption.</dcterms:abstract>
