Alors que la préservation de l’ordre scolaire constitue une préoccupation centrale de nombreux agents, la thèse s’intéresse aux « cas d’élèves », catégorie indigène qui désigne les élèves non conformes à cet ordre. Elle interroge la manière dont le lycée et ses agents s’organisent pour faire face à ces situations, à partir d’une enquête ethnographique et par entretiens. Devant concilier injonctions institutionnelles et contraintes de la pratique, les agents scolaires ont développé une activité qui, en regroupant plusieurs registres de pratiques (signalement, enquête, diagnostic, traitement), leur permet de maîtriser l’incertitude provoquée par les « cas d’élèves ». Cette activité est en partie réalisée par ce que la thèse analyse comme une forme peu bureaucratisée de guichet éducatif qui élabore des solutions individualisées se répartissant sur un continuum entre adaptation et rigidification du cadre scolaire. Or, ce travail et le guichet cristallisent les tensions et les contractions d’une action publique construite pour des groupes mais enjointe de « s’adapter » à des cas. C’est alors aux agents de terrain d’articuler, bon an mal an, la juxtaposition de ces modèles et ainsi de fabriquer une action publique sous contrainte. En outre, le guichet fait l’objet de luttes et de coalitions internes au lycée qui participent à la définition de ses contours et de ses façons de travailler les « cas d’élèves ». La thèse met à jour le processus relationnel et multidimensionnel par lequel le guichet s’institutionnalise et contribue à façonner et fragmenter les destins scolaires de jeunes majoritairement issu·es des classes populaires. Since the 1970's, the rise of mass secondary education and the transformation of schooling have modified the official institutional mandate of high schools. Beside the traditional missions of instruction and socialisation, they now ought to contribute to the professional inclusion of all pupils beginning with reducing early school-leaving and making every pupil succeed at national exams. Initially built for groups from the elite, compliant with school norms, high schools can now receive pupils who are more estranged to these norms specific adaptation needed. Drawing on ethnographic observations and narrative interviews, the thesis studies the ways in which high school agents organise to face these situations. It sheds a light on the informal work practices that high school agents have shaped and routinised totake ca re of what they call « pupils cases ». These practices materialise what the thesis calls the social mission of high schools, which is mainly carried out like bureaucratic encounters, that is to say that agents, as street-level bureaucrats, operate creaming and rationing basing their judgments on direct interactions with pupils, their family and other school or social staff. They develop individualised interventions that spread over a continuum between relaxing and rigidifying the school frame. By doing so, the management of pupis cases contributes to shape and fragment the school lot of youngsters who mainly belong to the working class. Group management and case management of singular pupils do not embed easily, putting the school order at risk, in a context of abundant yet unprioritised political goals and prescriptions. High school agents are urged to arbitrate between these heteroclite goals, stressing their work and producing public action under constraints. The thesis also unravels the coalitions and conflicts within the school, understood as a heterogeneous social space, that contribute to shape the specific practices of agents and schools towards pupils cases. It brings to light the relational and multidimensional institutionalisation process of the social mission.
